Our History

Gingerbread House is a very old preschool and has been attended by a large number of families from the Richmond area. The original preschool was called Gingerbread House Cooperative Preschool. It was started in the spring of 1969 by a group of parents who felt the lack of a cooperative preschool group in Richmond. After a very busy summer setting up administration, hiring a teacher, finding a location, and gathering equipment, the school was opened in September 1969. This would not have been possible without help and guidance from Council and from other cooperative preschools, especially St. Giles in Vancouver.

In 1972, the preschool's name was changed to Gingerbread House Parent Participation Preschool. Official society status under the Societies Act of B.C. was obtained in 1994. Gingerbread House Preschool is the result of the cumulative effort of many dedicated teachers and parents who have worked over the years to develop the physical environment and nurturing philosophy, which our children enjoy today.
